God is love
Here are some thoughts I had during a farewell of one of my friends. These helped me figure out a few different struggles I have been going through, so I hope they are useful to you.
We are children of God and thus we are made in His image.
When we love someone, it is not a feeling, but something we can see. We are able to see the image of God in that person. The goodness that we get from God is manifest through love.
Basically when we love someone, it is not us feeling a certain way. It is us having access to information enough to know the potential god that person can become. It is us seeing God in them. It is us seeing eternal life. Love is a sign that something or someone is a child of God.
So that is why you can fall in love more than once. Because love does not come from you. It comes from God. And maybe that means you can never really stop loving someone you've felt love for, because you do not control love. It simply is not an emotion like anger or sadness. To say one can control love is to say one can control the atmosphere he breathes.
Love does not come from you. It has originated in the person. You see love in a person. You see the god in him. You did not create love for him, but rather you have seen him as Christ sees him and thus you want to be with that goodness forever. Letting go of the person you love for whatever reason feels like a bad thing. That makes sense. If you know someone well enough to see that they could someday be like Christ, you will want to be with them just as you would like to have eternal life.
Thus when we serve others and love others, we are serving and loving God! Because love comes from Him! What we do for others we would do for Christ because when we love someone we serve them as we would serve Christ! Holy cow this is so great.
That's why love is so irrational. Because we would do anything for eternal life and we trust that person as we would trust God!
I can love anyone because everyone is made in the image of God. Everyone is made in the image of love.
